PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Blood pressure changes in the human body, either increased or decreased, involve complex mechanisms. There is no single causative factor in either case. Probably the most common type seen is referred to as Primary Hypertension or Benign Essential Hypertension, which is a disorder of unknown origin characterized primarily by an elevated diastolic pressure associated with a generalized arteriolar vasoconstriction which in turn produces an elevated systolic pressure. Other causes of hypertension include degenerative tissue and organ changes as in aldosteronism, glomerulonephritis, nephrosclerosis, renovascular disease, toxemia of pregnancy, coronary artery disease and cardiac hypertrophy, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, and obesity.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
