They impact a variety of functions and systems of the body including cell structure, nerve function, energy production, bone strength, and circulation as well as the effects of aging, and toxicity. Electrolyte balance effects such a wide range of body systems that it can have an impact on our overall health and well-being.

Nerve Function
All electrical impulses in the body are transmitted using electrolytes. Electrical charges are passed from one neuron to another by sodium and potassium and the exchange of certain neural transmitters. Electrolytes help maintain the ionic balance across cell membranes. Ionic balance is what maintains the integrity of the cell membrane. It is estimated that one third of the energy of the body is consumed just in maintaining the ionic balance and hence the integrity of the cell membrane. How this system functions greatly effects how we feel.

Energy Production
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the main energy currency of the body. This molecule is made in the mitochondria of cells during cell metabolism when glucose is converted to carbon dioxide and water. Magnesium, phosphate and other trace minerals are essential for the production of energy. Being deficient in these electrolytes will result in low energy levels.

Structure
Calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus play key structural roles in the formation of bones and teeth. These three key electrolytes make up most of the hard structure of the bone matrix. When we are deficient in these important minerals symptoms of osteoporosis and stress fractures may result.

Aging
Electrolytes are essential for healthy, young looking skin. Dry, wrinkled skin is the result of the loss of essential fluids and minerals that keep the skin elastic, hydrated, and smooth. Many of the structural and enzymatic proteins of the body require that electrolytes be present in solution for the protein to maintain form and function. If electrolytes are not present, the protein becomes inactive.

Circulation
In a healthy body, blood flows freely. Deficiencies in certain electrolytes and water can result in three problematic conditions. First, the amount of surface area of the cells that is exposed to oxygen is reduced. As a result, gases cannot be exchanged and the blood becomes less efficient. Second, the blood becomes resistant to flow and becomes sticky. Third, the blood becomes inclined to other more dangerous conditions such as the formation of clots, increasing the chance of myocardial infarction, strokes and phlebitis. Because blood flow is reduced, energy levels drop, and toxins can build up.

Recommendations
As a dietary supplement for adults and children four or more years of age: one or two tablespoons daily between meals. For children under four: one or two teaspoons per day, or as directed by your health care professional.
