Ignatia amara - Boericke & Tafel, Nature's Way
From Ignatia amara, also known as Strychnos ignatia, St Ignatius' bean. The homeopathic remedy is made from the seed pods, which contain the powerful poison strychnine. Strychnine acts on the central nervous system.
Sleeplessness is due to grief, worry, shock or emotional upset.
Ignatia is most effective in children who are bright, precocious and highly strung, and in adults who are alert, nervous, rather pale, given to sighing and yawning, and wear a rather strained expression on their face, often with frequent blinking or a facial tic. Ignatia types are very fragile emotionally, inclined to be perverse and unpredictable. Women who respond well to Ignatia are often artistic.
Mental symptoms alleviated:
Rapid changes of mood; apprehension, fear of going out alone, fear of being seen to take initiative, suddenly bursting into tears; tendency to be self-pitying, self-blaming and hysterical; easily shocked, easily knocked off emotional perch by grief, love, worry; mild depression; little capacity for anger or violence; sensitivity to noise, especially when studying; inability to work; wanting to be socially responsible and well thought of.
Physical symptoms alleviated:
Headaches which feel as if a nail is being driven into side of head, made more intense by lying on painful side; nervous headaches in children, relieved by heat but made worse by coffee; fainting in confined spaces; beads of sweat on forehead and upper lip which disappear when eating; sour taste in mouth; hiccups, or spasmodic, irritating cough; febrile convulsions; feeling very thirsty with a chill; red face which is chilly to the touch; inflammation, relieved by firm pressure; extreme sensitivity to pain; pain concentrated in small areas; choking; tickly cough; sore throat which improves on eating solids; feeling as if there is a hard lump in the throat; craving for unusual foods when ill; craving for sour or acidic foods; upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, alleviated by eating; in women, painful spasms of uterus during periods; constipation due to emotional factors; piles; rectal spasms, or prolapse of rectum which causes sharp upward-shooting pains.
The above symptoms are often relieved by eating, urinating, firm pressure, walking as well as resting, lying on the painful side and by external heat. Fear, anxiety, fresh air, cold, being overdressed, coffee, brandy, tobacco and strong odours are generally irritants; symptoms also tend to be worse in the morning and after meals.
Pulsatilla, Cocculus, Chamomilla.
Coffea, Tabacum, Nux.
Homoeopaths may prescribe Ignatia for ailments that have symptoms similar to those associated with mild poisoning.
For the Homoeopathic preparation, the seeds are ground to a powder, then mixed with alcohol. Then the mixture is diluted until it becomes non-toxic. Ignatia was made as a remedy by recognizing the reactions of healthy individuals to undiluted doses. The changes in the individuals were recorded.
When a Homoeopath sees a patient with a set of similar symptoms to the recorded ones induced by sulphur, they then prescribe it in an extremely dilute form. In a highly diluted dosage, Sulphur can eliminate the symptoms that it creates when it is at full strength.
