Allium cepa - Boericke & Tafel, Nature's Way

Characteristics:
You may have burning nasal discharge, and feel better from cold or open air.

Allium cepa, the red onion:
Red onion can be applied to the skin in compresses for acne, arthritis, and congestion. The homeopathic remedy is made from the whole fresh plant in July/ August. Onion contains an acrid, volatile principle which stimulates the tear glands and the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. At one time is was used to cure worms, earache, and bites from mad dogs.

Constitutional indications:
None in particular.

Mental symptoms:
alleviated Fear of pain.

Physical symptoms alleviated:
Headache centred behind forehead; earache in children; streaming eyes, with bland discharge; streaming nose, with discharge which makes nostrils and upper lip sore; stuffed up nose, with discharge which makes nostrils and upper lip sore; stuffed up nose, with discharge from alternate nostrils; toothache in molar area, shifting from left side to right or from one tooth to another; hoarseness, early stages of laryngitis; coughing which causes splitting, tearing sensation in throat - person clutches throat in alarm; coughing brought on by cold air; neuralgic pains; in babies, abdominal colic.

The above symptoms are aggravated by warm rooms, cold or damp, and the smell of flowers; they also tend to start on the left side and move to the right. Cool rooms and fresh air usually improve things.

Complementary remedies:
Phosphorus, Thuja, Pulsatilla.

Antidoting remedies:
Arnica, Chamomilla, Veratrum.

These days herbalists use the plant for treating such ailments as earaches, haemorrhoids, and high blood pressure. Allium cepa is considered a remedy for conditions with symptoms like those which are caused by exposure to red onions, such as watering eyes and a burning, runny nose.
