Cantharis - Boericke & Tafel, Nature's Way
Characteristics: You may have blisters and burning pain; pain
may feel better from warm applications.
The source of this remedy is Cantharis (or Lytta) vesicatoria, a species
of beetle misleadingly called Spanish fly, which contains a rapid-acting
irritant caged cantharidin. In traditional medicine Spanish fly was used to
cause blistering, increase fluid loss, treat baldness, procure abortion and
provoke sexual desire. Patients who took it experienced burning pains in the
throat and stomach, difficulty swallowing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and a
frantic urge to pass water; the unlucky ones went into convulsions, even into a
coma.
Constitutional indications: Cantharis should be the remedy of
first resort for individuals who look as if they are suffering intensely.
Mental symptoms: Paroxysms of rage, made worse by looking at
shiny objects or touching throat while drinking; excessive desire for sex,
amounting to a frantic itch for intercourse; extreme anxiety; screaming; being
insolent, querulous, irritable, even violent; losing consciousness.
Physical symptoms alleviated: Seeing things in shades of
yellow; burning sensation in throat; urgent thirst, with reluctance to drink
because drinking causes spasms of breathlessness; no appetite for food; burning
sensation in stomach; loathing for tobacco; pleurisy, accompanied by sweating
and palpitations; erysipelas; burns and scalds relieved by cold applications;
insect bites with a blackish centre; redness and infection which spreads within
4 hours; swelling and suppurating rashes on hands; ice-cold hands with finger
nails which feel red hot; burning sensation on soles of feet at night; severe
cystitis, with scalding inflammation which worsens rapidly and cannot be
ignored; burning pains in abdomen which feel as if intestinal lining has been
stripped raw; severe distention of abdomen; diarrhoea which burns and
scalds.
The above symptoms are exacerbated by touch, movement, coffee and cold
water, and tend to get worse in the afternoon. However, they respond to warmth
and gentle massage, and can be soothed by belching and passing wind; these are
least troublesome at night and in the morning.
Complementary remedies: Belladonna, Mercurius, Phosphorus,
Sepia, Sulphur.
Antidoting remedies: Aconite, Pulsatilla, Camphora.
Cantharis has been used for many different disorders such as baldness,
rheumatism, and as an aphrodisiac. It can be toxic in high doses and can create
abdominal cramps vomiting up blood, pains in the throat and stomach, diarrhoea,
kidney damage, convulsions, coma, and death. Homoeopaths prescribe Cantharis
for their patients who have symptoms like those above. Cautions: Homeopathic medicines are safe and remarkably free from
side effects. Your condition, however may require special care, so please
observe the following: Do not take this product for pain for more than 10
days(adults) or 5 days(children) unless directed by a doctor. If pain gets
worse, if new symptoms occur, or if redness or swelling is present, consult a
doctor because these could be signs of a serious condition. As with any drug,
if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional
before using this product. Warning--Keep out of the reach of children.
